Grayson: Obama must not give in to GOP’s ‘unquenchable thirst to hurt the needy’

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/03/06/grayson-obama-must-not-give-in-to-gops-unquenchable-thirst-to-hurt-the-needy/

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) and freshman Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA) announced Wednesday that they are drawing a “line in the sand” with President Barack Obama on cuts to social programs and possible deals to end the sequester. Grayson said that certain cuts are unconscionable and that progressives must rally against the Republican Party’s “unquenchable thirst to hurt the needy” and urge the president not to make cuts to programs that will disproportionately hurt the poor, the sick and the elderly.

Grayson and Takano have written a letter to the president stating that they will staunchly oppose any cuts to benefits in Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security “including raising the retirement age or cutting the cost of living adjustments that our constituents earned and need.” The congressmen hope that other Democrats and members of the House Progressive caucus will sign the letter as well.

On a Wednesday afternoon conference call with Bold Progressives announcing the letter, Grayson and Takano were joined by the National Organization for Women’s President Terry O’Neill, who also called upon legislators to make it clear that they oppose cuts to the social safety net.

O’Neill said, “Women are far more likely to be entirely reliant on Social Security for their monthly income because they work a lifetime at unequal pay.” Two thirds of minimum wage workers are women, she said, and minimum wage jobs are far less likely to have health benefits or retirement programs.

1. Well, Alan - we all know that. Good luck with Obama. I signed the letter.

I don't believe Obama is listening to us - he is listening to Peterson, Bowles, Simpson.....he doesn't need our votes any longer.
Looks like Obama has that unquenchable thirst, too, since he keeps hurling those cuts on the table.
At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if he switched parties. Actually, in a way, I would feel better, since one of us is evidently not really a Democrat.

This concerns me as as an "unknown." Unless there's strategy behind it, which I've seen in the past. What has appeared as caving, etc was actually strategy that resulted favorably. I sure hope its the case.

listening. He just don't know how adamant we are. It is representative's letters like these, that will let him know they want go along with him this time. They are just reminding him where we want to go if he forgets. The people that don't want these cuts understand the issues including the Debt. Simpson\Bowles and those in the media pushing Romney\Ryans failed talking points continue to insult our intelligence by trying to get that agenda in through a back alley.

Short Term pain means nothing for us when their whole goal from the start was to destroy those programs. I understand the age limit has already been changed for Social Security. The real people that the Republican side should be negotiating with are their peers in Congress. The real betrayal would be the representatives that go along with the plan. Using the President to take the blame is only for cover. He has no power to change the law. The American peop0le just need to be educated about the games Congress play. The Republican Party has been very good at twisting facts to get their agenda through. The Democratic Party maybe finally catching on to their tricks.

7. The budget situation right now is a crises so Pres. Obama is laying out some rhetoric the Repukes

might want to hear. If Pres. Obama would cut SS or Medicare it would most likely be to the very wealthy who have several lifetime insurance plans and a stockpile of $$, property, investments etc.=those who really do not need SS. I think most of the wealthy at least sense this. Their living allowances are far beyond what we could imagine yet they still collect SS and have hospital bills paid with Medicare.
This is what President Obama may mean. But rhetoric like this is ambiguous/unclear and it makes a point in that although He is gesturing to the public that He is willing to compromise it appears that the Republicans & Teabaggers are not, thus putting the onus of non-compromise on them.
Some of what is going on is theater, that is what we see & hear. Much or most of what is really going on is behind closed doors which most likely You already know.
I may have over reacted to Your comment, but I do have much faith in President Obama and what the actual outcomes will be in the end.
