Time to Get Clean: You are an Addict

By Dr. Brian Carr
President, Behavioral Health Associates, Lubbock, Texas, 1991-Present
Chairman, City of Lubbock Board of Health, 2013
Submitted on August 13, 2013 - 7:38am

America, it is time to come clean. The solutions we find may not help. We destroy ourselves as we balance the equation so that life works.

What is your drug of choice…the nature of your dysfunction? Alcohol is number one for most. Marijuana is gaining ground. Trans-fats are a silent killer.

Reality is a bi*tch! Who wants to wake up to a life of toil…of delayed gratification? The American Dream has been purchased by Wal-Mart and the Koch Brothers. You can rent it but the actual reality is that hard work no longer ensures success, merely existence.

Big Pharma is calling. Why be troubled with the world around you? Make a deal to legitimize your addiction so that Jesus doesn’t judge you. A prescription for what ails you. No sin in that. Utah has the lowest rate of alcoholism but the highest rate of prescription drug abuse.

We are not here to judge but to gauge effectiveness. Had enough of the LP&L scandal…just stop by Spec’s and imbibe some of the Turkey. Life will mellow.

Don’t want to deal with trouble. Just buy season tickets to see our new coach whip it out on the field. Who cares if your kid’s school implodes from lack of knowledge? Never you mind that your taxes go up and up while services go down and down.

You are stoned…intoxicated!

Let those who are righteous stand up and judge. Your piety is reflective of the arrogant of religion. I judge you as less Christian than I. You deserve less because you are not worthy. We may all be sinners but you are more of one than me. Say, do you have a first stone I can borrow?

Cheap oil allows our wheels to turn. While the rest of the world pays $12 a gallon we gas up our Club cabs and Expeditions and roll down the pot-hole filled road (brought to you by Halliburton and hydraulic fracturing.

Addicts whine when their supply is cut off. They deny, and then bargain. Anger follows than depression. Finally, acceptance begins.

Addicts look for scapegoats. Everyday other bloggers on lubbockonline reformulate their hatred of the President, the poor, women, and those who actually offer reason about the problems we face. They lament those who are different because of the color of their skin, their nationality, while screaming to protect their government farm subsidy while throwing children off the welfare rolls.

Sin sells and the government is cashing in. Citizens want alcohol and gambling and it generates tax monies. It will not be long before we have legalized marijuana because “we need the money for the roads”. Prostitution and gladiator death matches will distract and create addiction while hidden corporate forces gain more authority. Government spying and intrusion into our privacy will seep into our society.

The vast majority of “news” is a mirror of our addiction to meaningless conspiracies and desire to titillate our base emotions. Battle cries of, “He is taking mine and I shouldn’t have to share one penny” betrays the selfishness of addicts deep in the throes of their disease.

Those most attacking of social programs, of the call to help those who are the weakest among us, are shielded by contempt and labeling others as “the addict” for seeking those programs.

Grow up, we all find dysfunctional solutions. Some addictions only kill the user, others kill our soul.

Once again, the comments on Dr. Carr's blog are quite entertaining, especially the comments posted by the RW nut "Top Cat".

One other thing to note is that Dr. Carr's blog received 29 comments today. Meanwhile, Mr. Conservative, Dr. Donald R. May, only received two comments and his blog on the previous day didn't receive any comments at all. Could Lubbock, the second most conservative city in the country, be turning blue?

I waste hours each day looking at the posts - everything from Friday LOLcats to the 10 millionth rant about Snowden or how bad Obama is as a president.

Keyboard warriors unite!

Nice post, by the way.

I've been here for about two and a half years and it took awhile for me to make the first thousand posts, the time decreased for the second thousand, someone sent me a congratulatory note for 3,000, then it only took about 4 months to hit 4,000. I think it is only going to be about two months the hit 5,000.

I really got in the mood with the Friday Catnip posts that I made in the Music Appreciation group with the psychedelic 60s music and messing with MFM in the Lounge. I guess that the good thing is that I could be getting in far worse trouble if I wasn't a DU addict.

It's amazing the points he can get across in a few short words so I always include them in the OP. I'm surprised how many liberals post online at the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal considering that Lubbock is supposed to be the second most conservative city in the country. In comparison to the opposing views of Mr. Conservative, Dr. Donald May, who is also on the Lubbock Board of Health, Dr. Carr produces original and interesting blogs on a local, regional and national basis. Meanwhile, Dr. May's blogs read like cut-and-paste articles from Fox News, Freeperville, Breitbart and CNS with a bit of embellishment to magnify his hatred of the president.
