Are Conservatives Really Going After Michelle Obama for Promoting Water?

Are Conservatives Really Going After Michelle Obama for Promoting Water?

Last night, Bill Maher made a joke that may have just become reality. During a discussion about the GOP’s tendency to “blacktrack” (Maher’s term) on long-held positions just because President Obama happens to agree with them, the host suggested that the White House may be testing Republicans with First Lady Michelle Obama’s new public health campaign.

The riff got a huge laugh for Maher’s liberal audience, and also from his one conservative guest, former RNC chairman Michael Steele. The idea that anyone could criticize Michelle Obama for promoting hydration is preposterous, right? Well…

Some conservatives have been quick to jump on Michelle Obama for her “scientific” claims, pointing to a POLITICO story that quotes experts who claim there are discernible benefits from drinking one extra glass of water a day. Rush Limbaugh called it “just more command-and-control” from the Obama White House. The Washington Times went after the “the nation’s most prominent anti-obesity crusader” for misleading the public. And the Washington Free Beacon blasted the headline, “Michelle Obama’s Drink More Water Campaign Based on Faulty Science.”

And who’s the expert that most of these sites point to? That would be Dr. Stanley Goldfarb of the University of Pennsylvania, who said, “There really isn’t data to support this. I think, unfortunately, frankly, they’re not basing this on really hard science. It’s not a very scientific approach they’ve taken. … To make it a major public health effort, I think I would say it’s bizarre.”

Dr. Goldfarb, it just so happens, has spent a good amount of time arguing against Obamacare as a contributor to conservative publications like David Frum’s FrumForum and The Weekly Standard. That doesn’t mean that he’s being disingenuous about his opposition to the “Drink Up” program, or lying about the medical facts, but it does call into question his motives for speaking out so loudly against it.

because in most places it's not completely privatized yet. Since they aren't making a profit off water everywhere yet and they are certainly making money from all the shit that comes from bottles with coloring and/or sugar, caffeine and carbonation... and I have known people who wouldn't drink a glass of water f it was the only thing available but they'll drink soda all day long.

And Besides, it's Michele Obama so of course they're against it.

I go to the mega-grocer in town -- we have a choice, either WalMart or Meier's -- and see people with their basket loaded up with bottled water and I wonder if there's a nuclear attack imminent. No! These monumentally ignorant people drink this stuff every day.

Of course, it comes from the same damned aquifer that the town water comes from, that comes out of their tap. The huge bottling warehouse is merely a few miles down the road.

We here in Michigan are blessed with water. The one thing we don't need is to buy bottled water. (Actually, nobody does unless it's because of imminent nuclear attack or something.)

So yup! I have my own water. Screw them.

Before they tried to enforce healthy food.

After criticizing First Lady Michelle Obama for ‘telling them what to eat,’ House Republicans are proposing a bill that will tell millions of Americans what they are allowed to eat.

The Hill reported:

Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) on Tuesday proposed legislation that would require people using federal food stamps to buy only healthy food…Efforts to curb these purchases have been opposed by anti-hunger groups. But Roe said some states are already exploring ways to curb junk food purchases through the SNAP program, and argued that the federal government needs to take steps as well.

“Already, states like Wisconsin and South Carolina have shown interest in improving the healthfulness of choices in their SNAP programs,” he said. “By giving SNAP recipients more nutritious choices, we can take a meaningful step towards ending hunger in America.”

that one of the contributing factors to obesity was a minor quirk of not being able to distinguish thirstiness from hunger. Some people ate when they really needed thirst quenching. It would become a vicious cycle: thirsty; eat; nonsatisfaction; eat again; repeat.

They need to unite, and take a stand.

Republicans, if you ingest water, any water, no matter how thirsty you get, you hate liberty!!!!! And you are treading on something!!! Do it for Jesus!!!! And the babies!!!
