(NY Times on Scott Walker) Governor Who Took On Unions May Face a Closely Watched Recall Election
Thousands of volunteers have raced to collect signatures near busy intersections and malls all over Wisconsin, at makeshift drive-through operations in parking lots, during Green Bay Packers viewing parties and New Years Eve pub crawls, and even at a fold-up table inside Milwaukees airport just off Concourse C.
By a state deadline on Tuesday, these volunteers, many of them Democrats and union supporters, say they will submit at least 720,000 names on petitions to recall Gov. Scott Walker, the Republican who curtailed collective bargaining rights for public workers, leading to a face-off in this state.
Only two governors in the nations history have lost their jobs in recalls, but Mr. Walker himself acknowledges that, presuming there are no major flaws in the petitions, a recall election appears likely. That puts his removal, which would have a vote in late spring or early summer, within the realm of possibility.
Politicians and political operatives far beyond Wisconsin will be watching closely, not just for what the recall effort may imply for other states leaders who are considering cuts to workers benefits and union powers as a way to solve budget problems, but also as a sign for the presidential race. Wisconsin was one of several pivotal Midwestern states that gave Barack Obama solid victories in 2008 but then elected Republicans, including Mr. Walker, in significant numbers in 2010. Money from outside the state is certain to pour in from both sides for the recall vote.

(26,624 posts)Diebold
Diebold submitted its AccuVote-TSX DRE (Direct Recording Electronic) Touch Screen and AccuView Printer Module with firmware version 4.6.3, AccuVote-OS (model D) Optical Scan with firmware version 1.96.6, and the Global Elections Management System (GEMS) software version 1.18.24. All of the systems, products and versions have been qualified under the 2002 federal Voluntary Voting System Standards.
The State Elections Board staff conducted a voting equipment evaluation and a public demonstration for the Diebold equipment during October 2005. The Elections Board took no action on this equipment and requested additional information at the November 30, 2005 meeting. In December 2005, Elections Board staff was notified that the Deibold AccuVote OS and TSX utilize a memory card and Abasic component that were not tested by the independent testing lab during the qualification process. These components include interpretive code, which is prohibited by the 2002 federal VVSS. This equipment was re-examined by an Independent
Voting Equipment Approval Status Report March 23, 2006 Page 2
Testing Agency (ITA), which determined that if procedures are implemented that assure trusted chain-of- custody is established that prevents physical tampering with the memory cards, then these units are safe for use in elections. The State Elections Board approved this equipment, along with a series of security recommendations, at the March 22, 2006 meeting.http://elections.state.wi.us/docview.asp?docid=5872&locid=47

(70,483 posts)If anybody has better figures let me know.
They needed 540,000 signatures and got 720,000 and this in a state w/ a total population 5,700,000 and a
voting age population of 4,275,000 which at the most has 80% of those people as registered voters (3,420,000)
so over 20% of the registered badger voters signed up to have Walker recalled. If you go by proportions this
is even better than the # of people who signed up to kill SB 5 in Ohio. So the big story here is that it is not
a question of if Scott Walker will be recalled but when he will be recalled.
I might have to take a vacation to Wisconsin in June just to be there for the party.

(70,483 posts)I am in touch w/ a person in Wisconsin and he told me and I have read
that even some very red counties have been bringing in some large #s
of recall Walker signatures. What was he thinking? Because everybody
knows a teacher or firefighter or cop or the guy from the state that makes
sure dams and bridges are safe so going after those people was just stupid
especially after they had already taken cuts in benefits and pay.
900,000/5,700,000 = 15.7% of the state's population
900,000/3,420,000 = 26.3% of the maximum # of the state's voters (guessing that 80%
of people over 18 are registered to vote)
When I think about those students from Madison East High School who walked out
of their classrooms and up Washington St. and to the state capital where they stood
up for what is right I still get chills.
Way to go Badgers!

(53,475 posts).. as we did NOT want this to be Walker vs Feingold, or Walker vs Erpenbach, YET. First get the signatures.
I anticipate the number of signatures submitted tomorrow will exceed 900,000.

(5,756 posts)The people of WI woke and saw you for the POS you are. You're number is up buddy. The country is waking up to what a disruptive evil force the GOP is. And there is not a serious GOP presidential candidate. That field of republicans is so laughable I can't wait for the Obama landslide. Mitt Romney? Seriously? One big effing liar. Yes, liar. What hasn't he been for before he was against it?
Huntsman was actually the rational, reasonable candidate who is intelligent but rational and reasonable don't poll well with the GOP base these days. Crazy and denying science are in fashion for the GOP base Tea Partiers.
I never used to want to deny a citizen a vote but I'm getting pretty close to it now. The fact that stupid, overly religious people are allowed to vote is scary. I'm starting to think we should have an intelligence test for voting privileges.

edited to say that Wanker got 1.128 mil votes in 2010, so a million doesn't quite get us there, but close enough.

Why isn't Nicklas in federal prison for vote fraud and election tampering? Why isn't that judge under indictment for corruption and racketeering? this problem isn't going to be solved by holding another corrupt election.
