The Trope of Personal Responsibility Is Becoming Threadbare

By Carol Morgan

Personal responsibility…it’s the tired, worn-out, overused trope of Conservatives. I’m becoming fairly sick of hearing it from the common-man-parrot-patriot on the Right.

The reality is this: We have two Americas and within those two Americas are two myths. You might even go so far as to call them lies.

First, many believe the poor created their own condition because of a myriad of character defects.

Second, the rich gained their riches because they got an education and worked hard, making all the right choices.

I would say that my experience is pretty consistent in that the people who are the most moral, ethical and responsible are NOT rich, while many if not most of the rich people I know are amoral, unethical, and will dodge responsibility if at all possible. In fact, I've seen some of those rich people dodge responsibility even when it isn't at all necessary, like it's a game.

And so many people still believe these bullshit myths.

The true believers of “personal responsibility” need to zoom in closer and look at the facts. The richest of the rich, the top 0.01%, don’t work at all. They are the recipients of passive income from investments in industry, real estate, and the financial world. Those who do spend time in an office are in the investment and banking sectors, where most of the heavy lifting IN THE ALREADY RIGGED, NO LOSE GAME is point and click and holding a smartphone to the ear, AS SOMEONE OF CONSIDERABLY LESS WEALTH, TELLS THEM WHAT TO DO.
