Pharmacy Pleads Guilty to $2.2 Million for Medicare Fraud

Were not even half way through the year and already the Department of Justice (DoJ) has recovered millions in Medicare fraud and False Claims suits. Yesterday, the DoJ busted another scheme that had defrauded the government of over $2.2 million.
People rely on Medicare for care that is critical to their well being,commented Christopher Paulos, an attorney with the Levin, Papantonio law firm who practices in the areas of qui tam, or whistleblower, and False Claims Act litigation. Companies that abuse that system are stealing resources that people need for their own selfish gain.
The Louisiana-based pharmacy was collecting and re-packaging unused prescription drugs from local nursing homes and mental health facilities. The pharmacy, Community Pharmacy 1, would then sell the repackaged drugs and bill Medicare for the drugs. This resulted in Medicare being billed for the same drugs twice.
