Syria-Iraq 'Caliph' Incites Muslims To Holy War

(Reuters) - The leader of the al Qaeda offshoot now calling itself the Islamic State has called on Muslims worldwide to take up arms and flock to the "caliphate" it has declared on captured Syrian and Iraqi soil.

Proclaiming a "new era" in which Muslims will ultimately triumph, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi issued the call to jihad - holy war - in an audio message lasting nearly 20 minutes that was posted online on Tuesday.

It was his first purported message since the group - previously known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) - proclaimed the caliphate on Sunday and declared him its leader, in an audacious bid to sweep away state borders and redraw the map of the Middle East.

Baghdadi, who has assumed the mediaeval title of caliph, used the message to seek to assert authority over Muslims everywhere. He called on them to rise up and avenge the alleged wrongs committed against their religion, from Central African Republic to Myanmar (Burma).

"Terrify the enemies of Allah and seek death in the places where you expect to find it," he said. "Your brothers, on every piece of this earth, are waiting for you to rescue them."

Who could have known they would use jet planes as weapons?
Who could have known that inciting a sectarian civil war in a Islamic nation split between the Sunnis and Shiites would go so bad?
Who could have known that putting unqualified goofs in charge of key reconstruction posts would fail miserably?

I mean besides rational, sane or run of the mill HUMAN BEINGS that is!!!!

This entire mess is 100% on the heads of the neocons and they are not going to escape that culpability as long as I have blood pumping through my body and air in my lungs.

our intervention in Afghanistan resulted in the formation of al-Qaeda. Our establishment of military bases in Saudi Arabia resulted in al-Qaeda targetting us. In response to that, we invaded Iraq, partly so that we could move our military bases from Saudi Arabia to there. This has led to the formation of ISIS.

So...clearly the solution to these problems is more intervention. What could go wrong?

I really cannot believe that the press let them get away with that absurdity. Earlier in 2001, when Bush was at a NATO meeting in Italy, the Itallians placed missiles around the meeting site because there was a threat that terrorists my attack it with jet planes. As far as I know, this was never brought up by anyone in the American press, although the information was published in newspapers at the time.

The sick thing is that in 1994 Tom Clancy wrote "Debt of Honor" (one of the Jack Ryan books) and the end of that novel featured a 747 being flown into the Capitol during a joint session of Congress...so the IDEA of flying planes into the government buildings was a long, long time in the wilderness before the Bush cronies tried to (and actually with media help succeeded) play dumb about it...
