By 2045 'The Top Species Will No Longer Be Humans,' And That Could Be A Problem

"Today there's no legislation regarding how much intelligence a machine can have, how interconnected it can be. If that continues, look at the exponential trend. We will reach the singularity in the timeframe most experts predict. From that point on you're going to see that the top species will no longer be humans, but machines."
These are the words of Louis Del Monte, physicist, entrepreneur, and author of "The Artificial Intelligence Revolution." Del Monte spoke to us over the phone about his thoughts surrounding artificial intelligence and the singularity, an indeterminate point in the future when machine intelligence will outmatch not only your own intelligence, but the world's combined human intelligence too.

The average estimate for when this will happen is 2040, though Del Monte says it might be as late as 2045. Either way, it's a timeframe of within three decades.

"It won't be the 'Terminator' scenario, not a war," said Del Monte. "In the early part of the post-singularity world, one scenario is that the machines will seek to turn humans into cyborgs. This is nearly happening now, replacing faulty limbs with artificial parts. We'll see the machines as a useful tool. Productivity in business based on automation will be increased dramatically in various countries. In China it doubled, just based on GDP per employee due to use of machines."

Trees are the true rulers of Earth. All other species are dead without them. Then there's the sea. I think Plankton is the boss there.

From an alien perspective humans - along with a broad variety of other species on hte planet - could seem to be the slaves of grasses.

After Poaceae, you've got a contest between Coleoptera and Hymenoptera. The former has the vast and broad variety of a creature that has developed to fit every possible niche of any environment it finds itself in, while the latter is the most ubiquitous non-plant multicellular organism on hte planet and has a high degree of social organization.

Our lonely little twig jutting off the weedy branch of Primates isn't in the running for world dominance. it's just our limited understanding of spatial relations that convinces us of our dominance - as far as grass, beetles, and ants are concerned, we're no more consequential than lawn furniture.

This may have some impact on the curve of our technological progress..

Most statements that the 'Singularity is Coming' seem to ignore the effects of the resource limits that we are pushing against.

Things like microchips take an enormous amount of social organization to create and use. How much disruption can those production pipelines withstand? Not much.

... but in fairness, I'm sure most of these people also think we'll be colonizing the solar system by the time this "singularity" is reached, thus making the question of diminishing resources somewhat moot.

Just like that kook Ray Kurzweil.

But... but... but... the evidence from science fiction is overwhelming!

Meh! People always overstate future projections.

Where's my flying car? Where are the nuclear vacuum cleaners? And for some reason my hovercraft is full of eels!
