WASHINGTON Rabbi Steven Abraham of Omahas Beth El Synagogue is getting a firsthand look at the situation in Israel this week.
He has taken cover during repeated rocket-attack warning sirens, watched schoolchildren in a bomb shelter learn Bible lessons about courage and seen the Iron Dome missile defense system deploy over his head.

Abraham is part of a Rabbinical Assembly group that traveled to Israel despite State Department warnings that it would be wiser to avoid the area as the war between Israel and Hamas intensifies.
In a phone interview from Jerusalem on Tuesday, he said he wanted to deliver a message that Omahas Jewish community stands with the people of Israel.
