Barak Ravid: John Kerry Made A Huge Mistake - But He Got The Message

Haaretz's diplomatic correspondent says the U.S. secretary of state has been forced to rethink his plan to bring Qatar and Turkey into the Israel-Gaza cease-fire talks.

By Haaretz | Jul. 29, 2014 | 9:33 PM

Haaretz’s diplomatic correspondent, Barak Ravid, said Tuesday that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has come to the understanding that he made a “huge mistake” in his efforts to broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.

In an interview with Aimee Amiga, the reporter said Kerry’s move to introduce Hamas allies Turkey and Qatar to the group of negotiators only served to sabotage efforts being made by Israeli allies.

“This was a huge mistake by Kerry,” said Ravid, “But, you know what? I think he got the message.”

Last week, Ravid revealed the full text of Kerry’s cease-fire proposal, which was rejected by both Israel and Hamas, and wrote in an analysis that his conduct in brokering the plan raised serious doubts over his comprehension of regional events. Ravid’s analysis was one of many articles across the spectrum of Israeli media – and government officials – that criticized the secretary’s conduct.

Kerry’s failed effort and the subsequent Israeli criticism of his conduct, however, did not lead to a new crisis in relations between Israel and the United States, Ravid clarified in the interview. Rather, he said, the tensions felt between the countries over the past few days is typical of Israeli-U.S. debate over differing policies.

Until they stop killing people in Gaza. I do not want my tax dollars supporting these killers.
There is no defense for this.
This conflict is so like our American Indian wars.
I was a docent at an American Indian site near Bakersfield. The stories I was taught are very similar to what is going on in Gaza.
In Kernville an Army general rounded up 30 some Native American men and murdered them in front of their families to teach a lesson.

I never hear those who banter cutting off Israel say anything about cutting off the terrorist organization Hamas.

Regardless of what you think, they are not.

Hamas is.

Stop aiding terrorists to buy $600,000 missiles to lob at Israel and see what happens.

You might be surprised.

3. Kerry's error was being naive enough to think the Israelis care what the US wants.

Israel wants US money, weapons, and diplomatic cover--especially in the UN and with the EU. They are willing to give ... NADA.

And if you ask them for something, they kick you in the teeth. So much for being a Super Power.

When Israel decides it's appropriate for him to talk to other nations, they'll let him know.
