(51,550 posts)Great article. Life was so brutal back then, everything was so labor intensive. I remember touring Monticello and being told how hard life was and what an ordeal it was just to have a hot bath. But little was said of the slaves. Yet it was they who kept Monticello livable. They heated the water for Jefferson's baths, maintained his fish pond, swept , washed, farmed and in essence did everything for him but lift his pen to paper.
I will gladly kick and rec this OP. Thank you elleng. I love history. The farther back the better.
