Many are just waiting for a disaster; and fear food stocks will vanish. Normal folk; are not as fearful or paranoid.

And they're hoping and praying for the Apocalypse.
If there's no Apocalypse, then they've just wasted all that time, money, and effort for nothing

"I told you so" would be good for the Rambo-type ego.

(133 posts)3. Preparedness v. Paranoia
I'm a First Responder and there is a huge difference between preparedness and paranoia, unfortunately the series that NatGeo has been showing lately is a perfect example of how stark that difference can be.
The programs place an undue emphasis on self-protection by booby traps and firearms. In one episode, the 'prepper' (their term, not mine) had selectively poisoned the food stocks they had stored, and only they knew which food stocks were contaminated.
These folks have bought off on the idea that if there is a large scale natural or man-made disaster that they will be on their own entirely.
The reality is quite a bit different.
I live in a high-impact seismic risk zone and the State is now pushing the model that anyone living here should have 4 to 6 weeks of food and water. (FEMA recommends 72 hours but that recommendation does come with some caveats.)
The people depicted in these shows do not realize that in the time of a disaster, declared or otherwise, protecting their life and property while on their property will likely go unchallenged. But the moment they step off their property, they will fall under Federal jurisdiction and can have their firearms confiscated and they can be either detained or arrested.
In a disaster, anyone carrying a gun has to have a badge, if you don't have a badge, you'll be treated as a looter or a vigilante.
Most gun owners do not realize that concealed carrying can be hazardous to your health. If you were to be injured in a car accident, have a seizure or a heart attack, when the EMT's arrive and see the firearm, they will back away and call for Law Enforcement to come in and secure the weapon before treatment begins.

If you are called to a medical emergency you have to stop and wonder whether the person with the firearm present caused the emergency.

In any disaster; people should and will cooperate; share water; help with the heavy lifting...
Its a much better and saner model. People working together will forge solutions; these freaks will only cause damage and death
