Not to take away from SpaceX's achievement; but, the McDonnell Douglas Delta Clipper DC-X accomplished vertical-takeoff / hover / vertical-landing flights in the early 90s. There really wasn't a follow-up to the Delta Clipper (and thereby hangs a tale!); hopefully, Space Exploration Technologies will persevere.
