Truth is, Romney didn't have any real help in "losing" the White House due to this guy ...

I think he took the right approach. Whether it was the turning point or not, he handled it well.

but then, the guy did get death threats and such.
Romney was such a pile of dung that the Repugs couldn't get excited over him enough to back him ... the conservatives were not convinced he as psychotically 'bagger enough, and the "moderates" in the Repug party (all 4 of them, likely) either didn't make up enough of the voting population, or they thought he was too conservative.

Look at polling before and after the release of the tape.
Romney took a big hit and never recovered.
