(149,580 posts)Shame on anyone who will not stop these types of assault weapons from being available to the public.
I really cannot express how sick the video made me.

(22,144 posts)While "assault weapons" are a made up term, even "non-assault weapons" fire the exact same bullets with the same results.
Military rounds (FMJ) do not "explode" when they hit flesh. Claims that they do are total bullshit. Hunting rounds open up, and that is required by law.
Does anybody know if Lanza used hunting or military rounds?

(16,974 posts)All bullets do that type of damage. What type of bullet was he using? I would assume not FMJ as they do not explode. Does not matter what type of rifle it is either. A bolt action will cause that and also all of the semi-auto types that the senator does not ban since they have no pistol grip.

(43,889 posts)Because my understanding is that Dum Dum bullets were developed because the predecessor bullets, the Cartridge S.A. Ball, Magazine Rifle Cordite Mark I, later to become the Mark II, was disliked because it tended to go through the enemy cleanly with hardly any damage. During the opening skirmishes in the Chitral expedition in India rumors started to spread of tribesmen who were still able to
fight even after they had been hit by several bullets.

(16,974 posts)That was not what I meant and yes that is also why I was asking about the bullet type. Military ammo will not expand or explode as far as I know due to laws of war. Hunting rounds and self defense rounds typically expand to do more damage to stop a person or keep the animal from suffering.

(22,788 posts)I think it should be pointed out that there is no "assault rifle" bullet. The ballistic round shown in the video is mainly used by hunters of small targets such as ground hogs to make sure they kill the animal (and not just wound it). It "explodes" on contact. Hunters of larger game such as deer use a bullet that mushrooms, increasing damage but also allowing deeper penetration. The military uses bullets that tumble on penetration, increasing damage but not disintegrating.
I mention this because if you want to be persuasive with reasonable gun owners, you have to be accurate in your discussion of the issues. The doctor here makes a very good point about what happens when multiple bullets strike a child, but loses credibility with knowledgeable people when he suggests that the Sandy Hook shooter used "assault rifle type bullets". The point is made far more effectively if it is factual.
