4. So, what, they should just leave his coffin out on the street?

This is redunkulous. The evil guy is dead and it's time to bury the body. The evil was in his heart not his body. In Islam you're not even supposed to mark the grave, just wash 'em up and plonk 'em into the ground. The imam's not living up to his creed. You bury the dead; it's not a debate.

'Once the body is in the grave, a layer of wood or stones should be placed on top of the body to prevent direct contact between the body and the soil that will fill the grave. Then each mourner present will place three handfuls of soil into the grave. Once the grave has been filled, a small stone or marker may be placed at the grave so that it is recognizable.' http://www.everplans.com/tools-and-resources/muslim-funeral-traditions

The Imam is trying to maintain respect in the community for Islam.

6. The plonking comes right before you put the wood over the body.

Or, as it is written in the Holy Qu'ran by the Prophet Muhammed, pbuh, "Plonk first, then plank."
