We humans once feared eclipses as portents of unfortunate events. We now recognize a solar eclipse as nothing more than what it is, the Moon passing between the Earth and the Sun, no more an omen than a sunrise or the changing of the seasons, something that happened again and again long before our species evolved and will continue to happen again and again long after it is extinct. Our knowledge has overcome our fear, leaving only our wonder.

However, Ignorance, Fear, Magical Thinking, Supertitions, Fairy Tales, and even some Religions (et al) have done their share of volcano sacrifices, in such cases.

I got to see the annular eclipse of last year, and I'm looking forward to the total eclipse of August 21, 2017. It will pass a little south of Portland, OR, where my younger son now lives. I've already told him to look forward to my visit. Here's a link to the path:

Oh, and better yet, there's going to be a total eclipse on August 12, 2045. That one will have an exceptionally long totality, over 6 minutes in most places. I've already warned my sons that if I'm still around and not totally gaga (I'll turn 97 about two weeks later) then they must make sure I get to see it. http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2045Aug12Tgoogle.html

yesterday morning, and I thought of posting it here.

Since I came back later, I didn't see the "Name removed' post, so I don't understand why anyone here since '03 would put their posting rights at risk on a good-intended sharing link thread like this one.

Oh well. Glad you enjoyed it.

I only remember seeing one solar eclipse in my lifetime and I was a very young kid. This was spectacular, very well done:

As for the "name removed post," at this hour I'm guessing it was a spammer, nothing personal, just randomly picked your thread to post on, and then was either auto nuked or quickly dispatched by MIRT.
