Muslim riots in Sweden continue after police shooting

Swedish police arrested eight people after riots in Husby spread to other Stockholm suburbs last night as young people set fire to cars and schools and vandalized property.

About 30 cars burned overnight in suburbs including Husby, Jakobsberg, Norsborg and Vaarberg, Kjell Lindgren, a spokesman for the Swedish Police, said by phone today. In Husby, a school and the Husby Gaard cultural center were set on fire while rubbish bins burned across Stockholm’s western and southern suburbs. A school was also set alight in the Skaerholmen suburb, and a police station and buildings in central Jakobsberg were vandalized.

The riots began in Husby on May 19, about a week after a 69-year-old man brandishing a knife was killed by police in an apartment.

Many local residents see the shooting as an example of police brutality, and the violence has stirred debate in Sweden.

Reinfeldt added that Husby — where around 80 percent of the roughly 11,000 residents are first- or second-generation immigrants — has been going in the right direction during his seven-year tenure, with employment increasing and crime falling.

Abukar said he had seen the riots from his balcony and that those involved were mainly teenagers aged 13 to 16.

Horniak’s claims of racist remarks were backed up by the organization Megafonen, which represents citizens in Stockholm’s suburbs. One of its representatives, Quena Soruco, said she heard police use abusive words such as “rats, hobos, negroes.”

that's weird. Inaccurate? maybe. but not abusive. The sentiment behind the use may have been but not the word.

for any non-white person. I have seen football (soccer) fans use the word toward North Africans & Middle Easterners neither of which would fit the typical American definition of the word.

I think it's terrible. I also think the DUers who support the rioting are misguided.
