(10,745 posts)Barring the miraculous ascension of a moderate in Tehran, which, IMO, isn't likely without an anti-Islamist pro-democracy revolution, the chances of Iran actually working with us or the Israelis is next to NONE. Zilch, zip, zero.

I'll bet we would fail -- outright fail -- to defeat Iran. We could invade, but the casualties would be twice that of Iraq. And a lot of other ridiculous possibilities aside. Admittedly, I believe Iran will try to force Israel's hand on Palestine once it gets the bomb, but at the end of the day, they won't dare. There is no need for war with Iran in my opinion. Ahmadinejad may think himself capable of being Hitler, but the world has changed and that card has already been played. We've seen how the type behaves, and whether he likes it or not, we know how to control him.

If you have not already done so, read LaFeber's The American Age.
(BTW, our global economy will NOT benefit from another manufactured war. Such an event will only prolong the pain and agony of the ongong economic paradigm shift.)

(911 posts)if he thinks you can sit down with Iran and say dont build nukes because of such & such expense. Its laughable. Dealing with them is not something that can be done in any reasonable way. Its just not. There are bad people in this world. Bad leaders that are not reasonable.
I also hate when people say " what if Iran was flying near our air space" Its not the same. Not in any way. There is a reason why countless countries support stopping Iran from getting nuclear power. Its not some made up fairly tail that it would be a very bad idea. The own rhetoric coming out of that country says as much. Talking about wiping Israel off the map. Come on Dennis.
Im not saying we should go to war or anything. But something needs to be done and I do trust Obama with this issue.

I have second thoughts about posting this, because it's likely to start a humongous flame-war and anyone who would look at my posts from way back when DU first started would know I don't try to disrupt or start flame wars. I try to choose my words carefully.
But I'm getting sick and tired of reading and hearing that that's what was said. At the very least, we can be accurate and then proceed with a discussion from that point.
I'm not optimistic, however.
And "Iran flying near our airspace" IS the same. We wouldn't allow it, and they shouldn't either. America is not the only country in the world that has sovereign rights.

Environment, overpopulation, nuclear exchange, hate, unsustainable use of resources, war...
Part of the problem or the solution?
It's up to you.

(20,441 posts)Buchanan, unlike other Republicans, actually favors a country that actually does have a strong manufacturing base providing good-paying jobs to Americans. Where he may disagree on Kucinich is the reasoning for his position. While Kucinich favors a strong manufacturing base for the sake of preserving the middle class and union manufacturing jobs, Buchanan may favor it simply because he is revolted at the idea of a foreigner making our products, especially if it is in a country run by a military dictatorship that calls itself communist.
Buchanan comes from an older strain of Republicanism that was more isolationist in world-view and a little bit more protectionist in trade to varying degrees, and they were this way for good reason. They didn't want the nations of Europe or China or India or any other country manufacturing our stuff if they were at constant risk of being blockaded, invaded, or bombed. Imagine the chaos if a war the size of World War Two erupted across the globe, while our economy is heavily dependent upon foreign manufacturing just to get the goods it needs.
