In the nineties, my profession provided me the opportunity to travel abroad almost every summer, and often during the academic year. In Russia (seven trips) I usually stayed with Russian friends, and at numerous conferences I was treated, not as a tourist but as an academic colleague. This gave me a distinctly "non-touristy" perspective on other cultures.
With that experience, I can fully endorse this essay. (See my "The View from Abroad," http://gadfly.igc.org/politics/peace/abroad.htm )
Is this essay available in text? The cartoon part is extraneous. The text says it all.
