Dear Russian apologists: Russia imprisons progressive bloggers

Alexei Navalny, Russia Protest Leader, Mocks Up Judge As Satanic Leader During Sentencing

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/07/18/alexei-navalny-jailed_n_3615506.html

Last year, he was on the cover of Russia's Esquire, which named him the most famous blogger in Russia, digging deep into the everyday corruption from local councils and politicians to the top of the Kremlin.

There was a time, in my naive youth, that I thought the USSR/Russia was somehow okay, was "not as bad" since it was in opposition to the US and its war crimes from Vietnam onward. There's a lot of people still falling into that trap, who obsess about everything the US government has done wrong while giving Russia and Putin a pass. "That was ten years ago," they say, "They had good intentions," they insist. They don't give the same rationales to the US and yet ignore the de facto dictator Putin and watch RT without blinking an eye.

Or been an apologist for them?

I'm deeply disturbed that RT and al Jazeera play such an important part on our news reporting. But until we have better news services of our own, we're kinda stuck with what I suspect is their subtle and sophisticated propaganda as being better than nothing.

...when the "RUSSIA" button was pressed. So we are being denounced.

This 'uhnope' account strikes me as a professional troll. He's tone-deaf on the causes he supposedly cares about, here stating that Navalny is a Progressive and implying he was charged with a blogging-related offence--Navalny was charged with theft and is a nationalist who suggested that darker skinned people are like cockroaches and should be shot. IMO, putting the Progressive blogger stamp on Navalny was a cheap production-line tactic intended to arouse kneejerk sympathy. There is also the verbal eyeroll above in reference to anti-gay law in Uganda.

His original post here is intentionally misleading and manipulative, attacking typical DUers like me who won't kneel at the Cold War altar again. I think its a good candidate for an alert. If it gets taken down, he can repost it with a more factual description, assuming he doesn't get himself banned before then.

Just because I'm grateful that Putin saved Snowden, (for the time-being, anyway) from the clutches of the United Stasi of America doesn't mean I think Vlad is some choir boy. What does one have to do with the other?
