A union can make a big difference to people's perceptions of a job. For UK staff you can find out which unions may be relevant to your job at www.worksmart.org.uk/unionfinder

And I still hated the job.

Unions are the only thing that will prevent governments and industrial capitalist from colluding to cheat workers. But Unions wont make a crappy job any better.

If you want a job to be better, you have to have control over the work. You have to feel like your input is necessary. You have to be able to control to some extent the environment of your job. You have to have democracy in the workplace and to do that, you have to rid yourself of the shackles of capitalism. A union can not do that but it is a small start.
