(15,882 posts)or listen to it, read "Them and Us" by James J. Matles & James Higgins, and "The Autobiography of Big Bill Haywood" by William D. Haywood and you will begin to understand that "union" between 1865 and roughly 1930 meant a far different thing than it does today, how the AF of L "business union" under Gompers, in league with business forces and with the help of federal, state, and local government authorities back-stabbed workers and helped crush the industrial union movement, leaving us with the hand of business around the workers throats today.
People think we started our downhill slide in the 80's with Reagan, but after reading the works of Mother Jones era, I realized the battle was lost much earlier, we just had a lot of natural resources and people to exploit before it became so much more apparent.
Thank you for posting this.

(11,862 posts)Seems the dockworkers just pulled out of the afl-cio..cause they were not progressive enough...
I had no idea..but I will find that book either on Librivox.org or Audible.com...I don't have time to read, but I do listen as I work..I do miss a lot but I often listen more than once so I catch stuff I miss over time.
I really am ignorant regarding the union movement, but am learning as I go along. I always knew they gave us all the perks we now enjoy and they are now all in jeopardy because of the flailing unions.

(15,882 posts)was a whole 'nother era, in which workers unionized for control instead of just "concessions". But the forces arrayed against them, ranging from business spending the equivalent of nearly a billion and a half of today's dollars on finks, spies, and assassins, the government, and turncoats like Gompers was just too much for the people to overcome.
I doubt that movement can rise up again, because people may have had that spirit schooled out of them. Living on the plantation relieves them of a lot of responsibility, and too many think think it means freedom when the master allows them to sleep in the house, instead of owning it.
