Iowa Gives Blind People Gun Permits

Iowa allows blind people to have gun permits. This means that people who cannot see can purchase and carry firearms in public spaces. By extension, this also implies that blind people are also allowed to fire these weapons. And some people don't see any problem with this.

Supporters say that blocking blind people from having guns would limit their access to protection under the second amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the one that gives people - all Americans - the right to bear arms. This restriction would thereby be a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, a federal law which forbids discrimination based on physical disability. That said, people who can't see are not allowed to have driver's licenses and drive cars, but no one seems too bothered by this.

One proud blind gun owner, Michael Barber, of Polk County, Iowa, says it's his right to have a gun and that alone is reason to have one. The fact that he is completely blind is irrelevant, he argues.

"When you shoot a gun, you take it out and point and shoot, and I don't necessarily think eyesight is necessary," he told the Des Moines Register. "If someone is attacking me, I'm going to be able to hear what they're doing, and if I need to use the weapon, I'll use the weapon."

Despite his impairment, Barber was able to complete the training that is required for the permit application process. We have no idea how this was possible, but one article by the Des Moines Register explained that the training can be completed online, without any hands-on instruction or a shooting test.
