Priceless: Man running for office ‘comes out’ to his Tea Party Dad as a Liberal Democrat

Carl Sciortino is a Democrat running in the special election for Massachusetts’s 5th Congressional District. The primary election is October 15th so he uploaded a video to YouTube, showing his ‘coming out’ as a Liberal Democrat to his Tea Party father.

is being presented as charming, the way owning a couple of dogs might be charming, or painting landscapes in retirement might be charming.

Is it just me, or do others think there's nothing charming about the Tea Party.

Don't get me wrong, I'd probably vote for Carl if I were in his district. I'll vote for any Liberal Democrat I can.

Example a brother in law who threatened his sister, my wife, with physical harm then said "someday you damn Democrats need to be run over by a train" (as if he could make that happen). My sister in law who carries a loaded gun without even a conceal carry permit to protect herself from African Americans (not the word she uses as in the next breath denies being racists). My wife's niece who stated on many occasions that all Democrats need to go to Hell, or you need to burn all the books in your house. I could go on with numerous examples.

After many confrontations there are some relatives we no longer have any association. I have my doubts, this Dad may be more of an old fashioned Republican and not a Tea Party terrorist.

I have an older brother (and I'm 65) whom I often describe as "an asshole Republican", by which I mean he has no business whatsoever identifying with the Republican Party. He made that choice in the 1960's, and while I never discuss politics with him (imagine why), I strongly suspect that someone, not this sister, who could have a sensible conversation with him, would discern that he does not go along with present day Republican crap.

I will say this about him. In 2004 I ran for the Kansas State house, as a Democrat. I lost, but that's not the point. My Republican brother flew in in the last couple of weeks of my campaign to go door-to-door for me. He was wonderful, and it was great. I'm sure he garnered votes I would never have gotten. The absolutely most important thing here is the familial support. When he knocked on a door and said, "I'm SheilaT's brother, and I want you to vote for her," it made a difference. Especially when, in a very Republican district he could answer doubts about my party affiliation by saying, "I'm her brother, and I'd vote for her."

Also during that campaign, my sister who was living in my district, also went door-to-door for me. We look enough alike that people initially thought she was me. She always hastily corrected them, saying, "I'm her sister." Again, having a sibling campaign is precious.

Never underestimate the power of family.

Politics is often different than family ties, but blood is still pretty friggin' thick.
