Upon his observations of the Mutualistes in Lyon and the Paris Commune, he developed Mutualism.

To be fair, American anarchist, Josiah Warren developed his similar theory (in practice) completely separately from Proudhon (his European contemporary).

Labor is demand, and Labor is the driving force in the economy as Thom states quite well. If Labor is not making its fair share, then the economy doesn't do well. If Labor makes its fair share, either by competitive wages, or by progressive taxation, then the economy does well. Again, Labor drives the economy. Labor is demand.

As to the cooperatives, it's long past time that we have democracy in the workplace.
