Laser powered flight and drone art

My friends at the Kansas City Space Pirates club are planning to attempt a new record for a laser-powered flight: 48 hours, from 6:30PM CDT Friday to 6:30PM Sunday.

The KC Space Pirates organization started with the purpose of creating small, laser-powered, robotic climbers for NASA's Space Elevator Games, 2005-2009. Currently, the Space Elevator games are dormant; but, the Space Pirates aren't. This record attempt is only their latest project in laser-powered flight.

NPR's Studio 360 program did a recent segment on artists working with drones. Their website has a fascinating video of a dance piece featuring a live dancer and two small quadcopter drones:

The theme is supposed to be: two species encountering each other; one metal and one flesh. I've suggested to the Space Pirates that their next conquest needs to be the world of art.

They are now going for a 25 hour record, not the 48 originally planned. They had technical problems earlier.
