I can see it might reach some that would otherwise not be reached, but that line "the fight for civil rights began when I sat on the bus" is patently false and ignores 50 years of fighting and dying and court battles.

If it would come with the rest of the story about her, how and why it was a strategic move on the part of the NAACP and not just an afterthought, it would be more valuable, because that shows planned change can come about.

Still, as the intro to an early junior high class it might be useful to wake them up before you get into the details...

that disease was caused by little organisms called germs and not from sick air or bad blood?

An even better analogy is how many people follow Michelle Bachman because they think she is a wise and great leader...

or

"The Americans have need of the telephone, but we do not. We have plenty of messenger boys." -- Sir William Preece, chief engineer of the British Post Office, 1876.

"The wireless music box has no imaginable commercial value. Who would pay for a message sent to nobody in particular?" -- David Sarnoff's associates in response to his urgings for investment in the radio in the 1920s.

"While theoretically and technically television may be feasible, commercially and financially it is an impossibility." -- Lee DeForest, inventor.

"The concept is interesting and well-formed, but in order to earn better than a 'C', the idea must be feasible." -- A Yale University management professor in response to Fred Smith's paper proposing reliable overnight delivery service. (Smith went on to found Federal Express Corp.)

"Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?" -- H. M. Warner, Warner Brothers, 1927.

"I'm just glad it'll be Clark Gable who's falling on his face and not Gary Cooper." -- Gary Cooper on his decision not to take the leading role in "Gone With the Wind."

Wrong and/or misleading is still wrong and/or misleading, regardless of how many people have nothing better to do than give out awards

if shiny things with distorted information distracts people from the real suffering and work that was done, and the incomplete information causes them to suffer because they were taught lies and distortions.

And we have a whole nation of political leaders and people who follow them like puppies who rely on exactly that, so it's nothing new.

Then again, if your purpose was to correct me, well, then, your question makes sense.

and, bye

sterling enterprises to engage in historical revisionism to make events seem more appealing to today's audience. I was in Meridian, Mississippi in the early days of the civil rights movement. I saw horror, things that keep me awake still occasionally. If you witnessed what really happened, remember that, and let the reenactment slide, as surely will history.

lawsuits stretching back 50 or more years, houses blown up, people killed, and as an NAACP secretary she was actually the second person they proposed for this action. The first got pregnant and wasn't considered as sympathetic. She really took a great chance, but it was part of a plan, which is why it was successful. (You are right - there are scenes that will stay with a person for life. And people shouldn't be allowed to profit while sweeping them under a rug).

The problem with the sing-songy revision is that when people need to address things today they aren't taught that a legion of people planned, and strategized, and fought for the wins in those battle, even against their friends. They leave out a lot of the blood, even fights in parking lots among supporters, hurt by people who were supposedly on their side who had trouble understanding the need for solidarity. It was a lot harder than it is portrayed in the history of today. The revision disrespects their sacrifice, and fails to train those who follow in the necessary maintenance and work needed to hold and further their gains.

It is sad that less-well informed people would rather argue for incorrect portrayals rather than understand why that might be assisting their opponents today. Or maybe they aren't who they say they are. The infiltration of other political parties has always been a popular past-time among the conservatives as far back as I can find in this country. Who knows.

But that is what the "go away - you don't have anything I even need to hear again" button here is for, eh?
