President Obama awards the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 16 individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. Established 50 years ago by President John F. Kennedy, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is our Nation's highest civilian honor. November 20, 2013.

1. We need some national good news. I'm glad to see more celebratory occasions. Reminders of what

inspires people to work for the betterment of others is good for all of us.
