The arrest of Florida Republican Congressman Trey Reydel recently on cocaine possession looks like it won't lose him his job. But what the arrest does show, is the massive hypocrisy among the ruling classes when it comes to substance abuse.

The fact that Reydel is unlikely to serve jail time or lose his congressional seat, should be a clarion call for all humans with a shred of humanity left in their soul that it is time to stop allowing people like Reydel to vote for laws that throw others in cages, for the same offenses he, and many others, have committed.

Remember when Congress gave up their ability to legally commit insider trading and quietly restored it months later? What about their private gym they refused to give up during the government shut down?
We have created a system where politicians, corporations and Wall Street are above the law! This is an untenable situation for a Democracy. I say bust his ass!
We should bank the savings from not having to process drug offenders through the Court system and warehouse them with private corporations, ruining any chance that these people will have to turn their lives around. Instead, we could build treatment facilities for those that want help and regulate the sale of these currently illegal drugs. We could fund drug education and mental health services that would further reduce incidents for abuse. It would also kill the black market and make the drugs harder to get for kids.
Instead, we dump more and more money in interdiction, and we have created a whole industry that has proven itself to be unable to accomplish the goal of removing or stopping illegal drug use. Are we proud that we incarcerate more of our population than any other country? The financial and human cost of our current policies are way too high. We also deny injured and sick citizens access to medical marijuana, which has been proven to provide a much more effective and safe treatment for pain, seizures, appetite stimulant, and anti-nausea than anything Big Pharma can create! This is what is really criminal!
