US to relocate its Vatican embassy to Rome

RT America·Published on Nov 27, 2013

Citing security concerns and cost savings, the State Department announced the United States is closing its embassy in the Vatican City, and will relocate it to a building on the compound of the American Embassy to Italy in Rome.

Vatican City is a sovereign city-state within the city of Rome. The relocation will save an estimated $1.4 million per year, the State Department said. Critics, including former US representatives to the Holy See, say that it's important for countries to maintain separate embassies to the Vatican and to Rome.

The announcement comes at the same time as the new pope, Pope Francis, criticized the free-market economy and trickle-down economics of the US. RT's Ameera David dives deeper into the meaning of the embassy realignment with Jimmy Akin, the senior apologist for Catholic.com.

...we used to be the ones doing the preaching. Maybe Pope Francis should reconsider the old ''rich man's indulgence tax scheme'' that worked so well for them in the past.

- Only this time instead of keeping it, they can give it all to the poor.
