I grew up in Wisconsin where Christmas trees are big business

The problem isn't the tree. It's the oil and gas and plastic, etc. necessary to get your tree from the tree farm to your house. The tree decomposes (creating gases, I grant you) but goes back into the earth eventually. "From dust to dust" goes for trees as well as for humans.
