The Mars One foundation will establish a permanent human settlement on Mars. This Indiegogo campaign will help us jumpstart the first major step in our project -- a private Mars Lander and Satellite mission in 2018. Your participation will help fund the 2018 mission and above all, show our partners & sponsors that the world is ready for this to happen. Mars One gives you the opportunity to participate in this historic project. This can be your mission to Mars!

(3,844 posts)It costs a hell of a lot more than $400k to land a probe on Mars successfully. Of course I would suggest cutting defense, then use half of those cuts for veterans care and space exploration.

(41,764 posts)Suppose they get there.. and live there. How long would their food supplies last, and how would they maintain themselves with future nourishment? Its unlikely they will bring cows along, or cattle. Growing plants may work but would have to be grown inside. The space appears small, its not like you can grow an apple tree, anytime too soon. Are they going to live on potatoes grown in soil aboard the containers? Your not going to be bringing chickens or fish with you. And secondly, where is the oxygen for living going to come from? This is not StarTrek with a food replicator.

(1,782 posts)but the space program has taken recycling to an extreme. I don't know the details, but I do believe they recycle everything, including CO2 into O2 as well as the stuff that bodies produce.

(27,509 posts)A lot of the surface is frozen mud, they can extract water using solar-powered machinery. Their unmanned 2018 mission will test this out. http://www.democraticunderground.com/1014669286
The water can be broken down into oxygen and hydrogen.
The atmosphere is mostly CO2, with the hydrogen they can turn co2 into methane and oxygen, which is the fuel SpaceX is planning to use for the return trip.
They could grow some plants, but not enough to sustain them, just to provide the taste of fresh fruit and vegetables, and to provide some greenery in their habitats.
Almost all their food will have to be sent from earth. It could be dried, because they'll have water on the planet.
Many years in the future, there may be other options.
Structures like Biosphere 2 could be built, giving them enough room to grow crops and animals.

Underground lava tubes could be sealed and pressurized.
