(57,936 posts)when I think of the risks they took in settling and starting families in uncharted wilderness areas of the US, when I think of the many women who became pregnant in lonely farmhouses and log cabins in the prairies in spite of the high risk of death in childbirth, I am horrified at the fear of Americans living in cities with helicoptered machine-gunned police forces to fight off the bad guys should any appear.
I wonder if our vulnerability to fear itself is some sort of memory of the fear of our ancestors. It sounds like a crazy theory, but compared to the fear that the early Americans rightfully knew, how can we claim to be afraid. Terrorists? Personally, I think we can take care of them very well. Americans are intelligent, resourceful, creative, tough, strong and resilient. At least, the Americans in my family are.
