I think that most of our recent presidents have been afraid of our intelligence agencies including the NSA. And for good reason.

Once they've got everything on everyone, everyone will have to fear them.

It could be that they know something you did but should not have done. Or it could be that you haven't done anything you should not have done, but they still have info that could harm you or something close to you. Or they may not even have that but since they alone have access to the info, they can just make it up.

A top politician in the country.

First way is to have knowledge of where all the bodies are buried. I don't think Obama has had very much of that knowledge.

Second way is that the Powers that Be have something on you, and you agree to do their bidding as otherwise they will "out" whatever it is that you need to keep hidden. That is the situation and category that I am quite sure Mr Obama falls into.

or should I say after Kennedy is when presidents started getting their marching orders from those men in that dark smokey room (h/t Bill Hicks).
It never occurred to me until lately that the NSA probably tipped the CIA off on JFK's plans to limit their cowboy ways... Makes more sense, now.

I don't think the tech was quite there yet for the NSA to be the big powerhouse is is now.

All this 'intelligence' started in earnest during WWII. The NSA started shortly thereafter. They would have had years of practice by the time of JFK's demise.
