I think their overt religiousness is also fake. And I don't think you can really get rich on making a duck call. You can make one yourself pretty easily. So, yeah it's all a scam.

Hell, those guys are an INSPIRATION for my entire family. Sometimes what we do is really difficult, and some brutally long hours, and our inside joke with each other is that we are gonna be pulling pots for the next however many hours. The worst is pulling blanks, working and making nothing. '

Note, none of us believe that we work anywhere NEAR as hard as those guys, and we say stuff like that with complete respect, nor do we deal with nature trying to snuff us out while killing ourselves to earn nothing. So I guess when seen in that light it's a bit silly, but it makes us feel better about our jobs to have heroes we can look up to.

We met several of them when we were out there last March. They said they ham it up a little, but they're really diving, and that one guy really did die.

The Kilchers in Homer are real, but they're quite wealthy, too, and they're certainly not far away from civilization like they're portrayed. My brother knows them well.

They are creatively edited. And, yes, scripted to some extent. That's what I meant by "fake" in many cases. But let's face it some shows are just downright fabricated. Or, that godawful child abuse show honey bonobo, they give her load and loads of sugar and caffeine before filming... Makes for better "spontaneous hilarity".. .

Not saying that what some of people in some shows aren't real or doing dangerous work (though ever think about who is doing the camera work??) just that these are not a true "day in the live off" representation. All those boring moments? Edited out. All that waiting, downtime, botched, crappy moments . . . edited out. Some of that "excitement" may be a bit fabricated or maybe just "re-created from the original moment because they missed it, or want to make it more interesting. Enhanced, maybe, played down, maybe, dialloged/scripted so it flows, sounds, looks, or just plays "better".

Make sense?

Just like a two-hour movie might cover a period of months or years.

But, yes, some are more real than others. I've never watched Honey Boo Boo or Duck Dynasty. We catch the pickers sometimes because they're kind of likable guys, and we sometimes watch the Alaska shows for the scenery and to get a giggle (see, e.g., the Kilchers, who are hardly "roughing it&quot , but generally speaking we watch movies.

(Although I happen to LOVE Discovery ID whenever I have nothing else that interests me, usually late at night. Nothing like a little murder and mayhem before you go to bed.)

It would be nice if someone in the media would take up the issue of this family changing its image in order to make more money. It does seem with the rise in popularity of supposed hillbilly TV the family would make more money promoting themselves as backwoods hillbillies than clean cut rich white people. It would be interesting for a news anchor to have the family members on and ask them if it is true that the lifestyle shown on the show is fake. Was there a time when they did not have long hair and beards? If so when did they decide to grow out their hair and beards? Did they grow out their hair and beards in order to have a more successful show?

It would also be nice to have the creator and lead producer of the show interviewed. I would like an anchor to ask them why they(the creator and the producer) chose this particular family? Did they make any major changes to the look of the family in an attempt to increase ratings? Did they ask members of the family to change the way they acted in order to increase ratings. How do they make decisions concerning the editing of the show? Is the show edited to make the family seem less cultured than they are in reality? How real is the show?
