(8,821 posts)I think we can now conclude that they purposefully let their civilization die, out of disgust at the future they had foreseen. Sad really.

(7,044 posts)Tell your supposition to 6 million Mayans alive today in the Land of the Quetzal, and enjoy the feeling you get as they laugh their asses off at you and your Faux Reality.
The Onion is a hoot -- but then again, Mayan Daykeepers never said the world would end. They said their calendar would end. And then a new calendar would start. The Corporate Media, Inc. (R) -- and Profiteering Doom Hucksters -- are the ones who claimed the calendar portended THE END. Hardly anyone actually paid attention to the Maya and what they were saying. So it goes in an Age of Corporate Propaganda and Spin.
Please try to refrain from adding further to the Vast Pool of Ignorance around native peoples.

(8,821 posts)I thought this was kind of a joke post, and didn't realize I was interrupting a religious service. Please continue with your sermon.

(6,635 posts)but their religion lives on. The remaining POGMs just formed another group known as the National Rifle Association for Obese Gun Monsters (NRAOGM) and continue to worship the almighty Obese Gun Monster to this day.
Human sacrifice plays a significant role in their rituals, and they defend this practice by invoking their main Deity known as the Second Amendment of Obese Gun Monsters (SAOGM) which is the supreme mystical God of NRAOGM. They have secret handshakes, belt buckles, and obese 30-round magazines which they use to identify each other as true believers.

(53,026 posts)The link is to the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City where the Calendar is housed.
Even not knowing it was Aztec rather than Mayan, the fact it is circular should have been a tip off that it contained no end point that would signal an apocalypse. All of these stories are media entertainment. None of them have any historical or anthropological truth to them.

(53,026 posts)You want to do more than snicker, you can read about the Aztec world view, including their circular conception of time, here:

(10,175 posts)It's just designed to look real.
I fully understand the difference between Aztec and Mayan.
The links you sent are quite interesting I will take a look at them, though

(53,026 posts)Ever single media piece in the past two years has showed the Aztec calendar when talking about the supposed Mayan apocalypse. Whether intentionally satire or not, they are all bullshit.

(68,644 posts)But seriously. How much cultural sophistication can you expect from a POS low-humor hit piece that shits on pale and/or obese people in order to make a really weak point?
(Talking about the Onion piece, not the DU member who posted it)
I don't know about you, but I would love for a jury to have hidden this Onion piece for it's gratuitous stereotyping.
Happy weekend, you!
