THE CANCUN UNDERWATER MUSEUM
Silent Evolution
The Banker
The Cancun Underwater Museum (MUSA) project began when Jason DeCaires Taylor, an English artist teamed up with Jaime Gonzalez, the director of the National Park and Roberto Diaz, then President of the Nautical Association for Cancun and Isla Mujeres. Something had to be done about the damage to the local reef areas. Hurricanes, tropical storms and mankind were taking their toll on these natural gardens. The three experts came up with the idea of submerging life sized statues in order to create an amazing artificial reef area where coral reef could grow and in which marine life and fish could inhabit and breed. The museum now consists of two salons and includes over 460 statues made by Jason and some other local artists.

Cancun Underwater Museum | The Silent Evolution
The initial sinking began on November 14, 2009. Within this projects initial stage and underneath the authority of Jason deCaires Taylor, artist and sculptor, the three sculptures had been submerged: La Jardinera de la Esperanza (The Gardener of Hope), Man on Fire ("Hombre en llamas" , and Dream Collector ("Coleccionista de Sueños" . The sculptures were situated nearby to these reefs and nearby to the marine habitats to develop the ecosystem which assists in maintaining reefs and corals within the conditions that were ideal.

(111,245 posts)(assuming we survive climate change) some undersea explorer is going to find these things and start a new religion based on them.
For now, it's a wonderful way to give habitat back. Even if sea level rises to the point corals won't survive on the statues, the fish will still enjoy them.

I hope this project can make a difference for our ecosystem. To rebuild what man has destroyed.
Thanks fresh~

Mahalo, for showing us the brilliance of "Jason DeCaires Taylor, an English artist teamed up with Jaime Gonzalez, the director of the National Park and Roberto Diaz, then President of the Nautical Association for Cancun and Isla Mujeres", and the Cancun Underwater Museum, sheshe.
My sister in New York would love that, too! From your link..
This piece was made by Salvador Quiroz. Salvador created this piece based on Mayan Gods Itzamna and Ixchebelyax. The sculpture has a turtle shape and has hollow inlets and spaces for juvenile fish to breed and inhabit
