(18,219 posts)And why is it that there are so many British accents on these American news shows telling us how things should be done?

(18,219 posts)heard in these news features these days. I will have to remember this and train myself to think opposite of the trend, just in case it does influence me....although I don't think that it works for me, since I just get irritated to hear a foreign accent telling me what is best for me and my country. I have to remember that if they are bringing out the British accent, they are trying to convince me of something that is against my best interests.

(8,821 posts)I have to say that Jon Stewart has not lost anything in all the many years he's been on television. This take-down is as sharp and as powerful as any he has ever done on the Conservatives and their bankrupt philosophy of wealth uber alles.
If anything, I would argue Jon Stewart is now better than he has ever been.

(39,909 posts)The Message Control memes are STRONG in what passes for our Media today.
This is exactly HOW these memes that "we must cut entitlements"
and "Everybody has already accepted that we must raise the retirement age"
should be met.
I reject the Premise that Social Security is a major problem for our economy in the near future.
That is a LIE being told by RICH people.
I wish our Democratic Party Leadership would be as direct in confronting these LIES.
Is a simple, direct statement like the above too much to ask from our Democrats?

(18,219 posts)And I will put absolutely nothing past the RWNJ's. Voting records are easy enough to check, and I do. And I will give new on the campaign trail Dems a pass as long as they don't come out and say that they are willing to cut benefits. I remember the days before Medicare, and I lost both grandmothers to diseases that they could have survived if they could afford a doctor. I will not allow the country to go back to those days.
I do not remember before SS, but my mother did, and her memories of the times before there was any income for older people would break anyone's heart, if they listened.

(53,661 posts)policies myself. That despite the ability to pay, but then, like the old 'sharecropper's deal' they change the rules in the middle as if your thousands of dollars meant nothing.
Regarding the 'pre-existing' scam, death is a pre-existing condition. We will all die, and the way we do it and how humane it is, or how long it can be avoided, has for too long been in the hands of those who will tell any lie to keep profits to themselves.
Regarding the 'junk' aspect, they go out of their way to not pay for a person to get well. Their bonuses depend on that... you're a just a few digits on their profit and loss sheet. If they don't make a profit, you can just go right ahead and die.
Your life or quality of life, your rights as a patient or consumer mean nothing. They don't call some in the companies 'head choppers' or 'gate keepers' for no reason.
The ACA is just a start, and I believe it is is meant to change the way we look at healthcare to more of the European model. As people benefit and are taken care of, they have more freedom and control over their lives, their ability to work, parent and be involved politically.
It also registers people to vote, as I found in a Daily Kos article. This is why the RWers hate it so much. And I can't go back to the other way, and the GOP knows it. We'll keep an eye out for distractions and diversions. The ones that bother me the most are those that appeal to selfishness and disrespect for others. This is learned from media and it's created a very hostile atmosphere for so many people in their country.

(39,909 posts)...will certainly change how Americans see Health Care in the USA.
"The Uniquely American Solution"...... indeed.

(57,936 posts)As far as I am concerned any person who agrees to cuts in SS or Medicare is not a Democrat. Doesn't deserve the support of Democrats. Social Security and Medicare are what differentiate Republicans from Democrats. Absolutely no cuts and no chained CPI.
Baby Boomers provided generously for their parents and still paid enough in payroll taxes to provide for their own retirement. Cutting Social Security and Medicare is stealing from middle class and poor baby boomers.

(50,983 posts)And I agree with his position 100%.
If a "Democrat" supports raising the retirement age or Superlative or Chained CPI I will not support that "Democrat".
There will be no reason to support such a "Democrat".

(12,121 posts)"Most people believe there will need to be entitlement cuts" -- Most rich people believe that.
I'm really glad he was persistent with that because it is a very important point. There is so much of the "most people" stuff pushed on TV and it often isn't true. Then the interviewer even said "Most people who understand the numbers..." Also not true. Glad Silvers clarified that again to be about most rich people who are afraid of their large incomes being taxed more.
