(949 posts)I was born there. Bikes are EVERYWHERE. You can get anywhere with a bike. They do also have big congested highways, don't get me wrong. And many Dutch people own both a car and a bike, but use the bike for local trips. I know many people who do bike cross-country .. who'd rather spend 1 hr on the bike than 45 minutes in traffic.

(35,151 posts)I have been invited to go on a bike tour of Holland summer of 2015. A friend did a tour of France by bike last summer, she had a great time.

(2,536 posts)In November of 2012 I spent some time in Amsterdam. Since I do a lot of commuter cycling here in Tucson, I was gob-smacked by the Dutch approach. It makes for a much quieter, cleaner city (Only slightly smaller than Tucson), with friendly, cooperative people.
I found myself wondering how hard it would be to learn Dutch!
