(1,868 posts)But I would never eat it straight off the spoon! It is best served sparingly on toast with butter.

(56,996 posts)but I thought it tasted too salty.

(23,156 posts)there was a candy called -politically incorrect-babies, and they were simply chocolate. Just a small, chewing chocolate candy.

(18,219 posts)I didn't even believe that Vegemite was an actual snack, so I checked the internet to find out if it was real. OMG.
Warpy
(111,135 posts)but it's far too strong to eat by the spoonful. As a very thin coating on toast or a rice cake, it's not bad. Dissolved in water and thickened with cornstarch, it's a low calorie, very beefy tasting gravy. It also works well to flavor a rather watery and anemic beef stew or pot roast.
I could get Vegemite easily in Boston. Out here in NM, it's Marmite, basically the same thing.
I tend to avoid the snack sections in the local international market like the plague. This video showed me that's probably a very good idea.

(18,219 posts)I also thought that it was unfair to have them take a spoonful of it. But then again, the jam that I put on my toast is plenty tasty by the spoonful. Yum.

(1,210 posts)are quite different.
While they have nearly the same ingredients they are very different.
In the UK they had a "love it or hate it" campaign for Marmite. I love Marmite, but not Vegemite.

(111,135 posts)as far as flavor on toast goes.

(6,057 posts)This test was unfair...... you don't eat Vegemite or Marmite by the spoonful out of the jar.

(56,996 posts)The Australian Beer Report
The State of the beer union report
People often assume Foster's is all people drink in Australia and this couldn't be further from the truth. Fosters was once the standard beer across the country until it was bought out and sent to other countries all over the world. Since then it has lost its hold domestically. While Fosters still gets sold to tourists at places around the country, it isn't very common in Australia at all.

(811 posts)I got my Wife to try it when we met. (She Loves It!) I worked for a company that supplied Yeast extract to Kraft. Vegemite looks like chocolate, spreads like peanut butter, but, It's a very strong flavor, so you only need a tiny little bit. It works as an addition to soup, stews, gravies and spaghetti sauces. Again about a table spoon to a Quart or so of soup. Despite it's salty taste, it's a low sodium food. (potassium Chloride). It has the Highest natural vitamin B content of any food.
Scrape a Very small amount, (You should see the cracker through it.) on a non salted soda cracker and top it with a bit of fresh farmers, or fresh goat cheese. YUM!

(402 posts)I lived with a Aussie for 3 years and she had to have Vegemite almost everyday. I think it is waaay to salty but she thought i didn't like it because there is too much sugar in American bread, it did not stop her though.

(10,409 posts)Hubby and I got a small thing of vegemite when we were in Australia and opened it up. We were going to put it on toast, but we couldn't get it past our noses. Ugh!
OTOH, Tim Tams, which are a chocolate-covered cookie, are great and addictive. You can get them in the U.S. now, so it's less of a special treat.

(86,323 posts)until they got to Vegemite part (although the lady asking about what pizza people might be eating was good prior to that). I started laughing at "...oh, that's rough!" comment. I'm still laughing really hard! I know a Qiwi and she has a restaurant, keeps a jar of vegemite for the adventurous. And there are some who eat marmite-I've seen it in the grocery store in town. I'll gladly pass on those. I'm not as gastronomically adventurous in my old age.
good video!
