Perhaps the most beautiful ad that I have ever seen about the U.S.A...
I still don't like Coca Cola or Pepsi for that matter, but this is really something..

(38,405 posts)I recall so clearly that my grandfather told the story of coming to the U.S.A. in 1910. The only requirement then, was that you had to be able to read a language, (any would do) and not have Tuberculosis. You had to stay at Ellis Island for a week, and then you were here legally. That was the law. It was changed in 1924 to what we have now.

(12,723 posts)Surely they noted the increased ATTENTION GM got after the cheerios ad. Surely anyone with half a brain can see this as an attempt to cash in on liberal buzz. Surely we can not ALL be exploited that easily by a mega-corporation selling poison.

(38,405 posts)Still, there are so many ads that say so many things. Some good, some bad, some angry, some kind. So, if I like an ad, that doesn't mean I like the product. Now, here is a phrase that I recall from years ago......."Winston Tastes Good Like a Cigarette Should"..
I hate the product, but someone came up with a catchy phrase. More about the art of advertising, then the poison of Coke, Pepsi or any other so called "soft drink"
our "librul" buzz encompasses ALL peoples and languages ; this country was and is great because we include all human beings in our shared dreams and accomplishments !

(15,435 posts)VERY nice to DO this thing, but since I've also become increasingly cynical AND depressed, this was a "money grab!"
While I can't remember when I last drank ANY "coke, soda, pop, pepsi, mountain dew whatever name is used for this type of drink, I have SHOULD admit to another thing I don't do anymore. Since it would probably get an "alert" I won't admit it.
BUT it does have something to do with a song. Sorry for the tease, but I also HATE that I can't rid myself of the harsh feelings that I have about what's happened to a country I once knew.
Also, before I get jumped, I DO realize that we've always had upheaval and violence from the inception of this country, I didn't live through much of it before my time. As a Boomer, I know things change and a certain amount of adaptation must be accepted, but the apathy I see is so difficult to accept. And I feel so helpless to make any real change.
So I sit here typing my frustration, but make no mistake... until recently I gave it my all. My wish now is that today's generation WILL really find a way to make their voices heard. I'm tired of going to meetings with too few people, joining groups with too few people and volunteering for so much with too few people.
I'm older, have some health issues and my energy level is tested at times. I have grand kids, 2 large dogs, a husband and both of my children who live close by. Always something going on.
Much healing is needed!

(7,784 posts)a 'real American' is someone whose ancestors never spoke a language other than English
Of course, the person who said this to me was someone who traced their lineage back to England and the early colonists.
Sadly, I think this attitude persists with the rightwing.
PumpkinAle
(1,210 posts)recognize the English spoken by their ancestors.
They would probably call them "furr'ners" too.
You are correct about the rightwing - so much for "Crown thy good with Brotherhood".
The rightwing - doing exactly the opposite of what Christ taught in the name of Christ!

(11,084 posts)We might go to species-ism, humans vs. ETs. Or so I thought.
Then the Rwanda genocide happened--lethal racism amongst people that most Americans could not tell apart. There is something wrong with human beings.

(8,084 posts)We keep buying into beliefs that say one type of person is better than another type.
One religion is better than another religion
one region is better than another.
What we fail to realize is that we are all one race stranded on the same rock in space. No one is any better than the other. but we love to find new ways to divide and kill each other.
It is the one thing we get consistantly good at with time.
I think the Aliens keep returning hoping one day we will be smart enough to receive them. but everytime they come here stupidity is still in power.

(11,084 posts)Why should anyone think their local team is better than somebody else's? My father-in-law insists we should root for the Detroit Lions. The Detroit Lions! They last won a championship in 1957 and he believes their rebuilding effort will pay off any season now.
Anyway this "us" versus "them" applies to football, to white vs. black, American vs. foreigners, and Hutus vs. Tutsis. It sounds insane to me. Yet it seems like part of human nature. One of the villains on the show "Person of Interest" would call this facet of human nature "bad code."

It's also borrowed interest. Coke advertising is the worst.

(3,688 posts)The ad trick is to associate the daily business of life; with sugar water. Get those migrant workers to drink their sugar water after a hard days work; so they can get their Type 2 Diabetes; and then Merck can sell them blood sugar reduction pills for life.

(18,124 posts)And they still hated the biracial commercial as well (Cheerios). With the firing of the staffer from MSNBC who was spot on, will these RWers ever apologize? I'll say a resounding no.

(38,405 posts)All over the what became the U.S.A. Cultures differ from tropical, like Seminoles, to Plains, to coastal, to areas around the great lakes.
Hell, they are the real settlers. And most were peaceful. We live in a multi culture society, and I am proud of that. Fuck the right wing idiots who don't know or care about that.
