"The United States plunged 14 places in the annual Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders on Wednesday. The group said it was "one of the most significant declines" in press freedom it had tracked during 2013.
The US in now ranked 46th on the RWB list, in between Romania and Haiti. It was ranked 32nd in the 2013 index. (Finland tops the entire list.)
The press freedom group was blunt in its explanation. It cited increased efforts to track down whistleblowers and the sources of leaks, mentioning Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden in particular. It also condemned the Justice Department's surveillance of reporters, and the continued leak battle facing New York Times journalist James Risen."* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

(58 posts)Why cant people here seem to be able to hold Obama up to the same standards as we did Bush Jr. Every time its We could have had worse. If Bush had passed the NDAA of 2012 or Obamas draconian us of the Espionage Act of 1917, ten times in history, seven of those under Obama people would be complaining. How about trying to push TPP through congress and his defending of the NSA instead of making any statement condemning them for breaching their charter as examples of things we all would have been howling about under Bush. I understand the argument that his party was unwilling to support single payer and thus the ACA but that doesnt explain nor excuse any number of items that Obama has supported. I voted for him twice, in a state where he had no chance of winning but I still voted. I voted for him because the other option was unconscionable. Because he is our guy, that is the reason we have to hold him up to a higher standard. Not We could have had worse.

(18,998 posts)That is how the game is played...it is also known as triangulation...
At some point I hope people will get tired of being triangulated out of our democracy and want to change it...and some here are, and more are waking up to it every day.
