‘Absolutely Un-American’: Dem Rep. Explodes During IRS Investigation Hearing; Issa Walks Out

During a hearing of the House Oversight Committee into allegations that the Internal Revenue Service scrutinized conservative groups’ tax-exempt status filings unduly, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) exploded at Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa (D-CA). Cummings charged that the way in which the proceedings were being conducted were “Un-American.” In apparent protest, Issa then walked out of the committee hearing.

1. Issa has a narcissistic personality disorder.

Does everyone remember how he lead the recall of Gov. Davis and thought he was going to be the nominee to run as his replacement? Then one morning he was "taken to church" when the powers that be let him know Arnold Schwarzenegger was going to be the next republican governor of CA. Issa practically cried right on camera, shocked he was that he was getting tossed aside.

8. Rep. Norton mentioned two key points:

-- that Issa had contacted Lerner's attorney prior to today's meeting to ask if he would agree to give the committee a proffer, which is basically the testimony Lerner would have given if she had been given immunity, & he said that he would;

Cummings said later he was trying to determine if they could get a “proffer” from Lois Lerner‘s attorney so they could find out what she really knows, and Norton was very curious why Issa would suddenly want to “keep us from revealing that we could have learned exactly what she would have said.” She said, “He wanted to do a show, a show in violation of every ethical norm.”

-- according to the DC board of ethics, Cummings should have been given five minutes to speak. She thinks Issa suspected Cummings was going to reveal the proffer agreement made by Lerner's attorney.

-- also, according to the DC board of ethics, there would have been no need for the committee meeting if it was known beforehand that the witness would plead the 5th, which is what happened here. Lerner pleaded the 5th & her attorney wasn't given the opportunity to present a proffer on her behalf.

Rep. Jackie Speier likened Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa to a “toddler” throwing sand Wednesday, backing her fellow Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings on the Oversight Committee after a heated exchange between the two men.

“I think the chairman showed a great deal of immaturity. It’s like a toddler in a sandlot throwing sand at others because he’s not getting his way,” the California Democrat said on MSNBC’s “Jansing & Co.” on Wednesday.

At a Wednesday committee hearing featuring former IRS official Lois Lerner about targeting of political groups, Lerner invoked her Fifth Amendment right to not testify, sparking Issa (R-Calif.) to abruptly end the hearing and cut Cummings’s (D-Md.) mic as he tried to ask more questions.

Speier said Issa was out of line.

6. It's hard to watch this without becoming enraged

If I were Cummings, I think I might have hauled off and decked Issa. The only way Issa could have dissed him more would be if he literally pissed on him. What a loathesome punk.
