Edward Snowden: Here's how we take back the Internet

TED ·Published on Mar 18, 2014

Appearing by telepresence robot, Edward Snowden speaks at TED2014 about surveillance and Internet freedom. The right to data privacy, he suggests, is not a partisan issue, but requires a fundamental rethink of the role of the internet in our lives — and the laws that protect it. "Your rights matter," he say, "because you never know when you're going to need them." Chris Anderson interviews, with special guest Tim Berners-Lee.

people that hate snowden = hate the idea of liberty

glad the guy whistle blew on domestic abuses,
but giving information to foreign nations is in fact a crime.
the idea that disagreement with snowden or his supporters means we 'hate' him is kinda reaching too.
sorry we don't all see him as a hero.

the corruption that some would rather not know about. Some clearly would sacrifice their liberty for security.

Sorry I dont see the authoritarian conservatives Clapper, Mueller, Alexander, and Brennan as hero's. They have done a thousand times more damage than Snowden. But to recognize that would mean facing reality.

Snowden should have been a recipient at that Medal of Honor ceremony in the White House the other day. He voluntarily instigated more sights aimed at himself than if he'd run towards a raft of machine gun nests. And he did so to protect humanity - not just a platoon.

meaning those of us that are willing to challenge the bullies to assure our freedoms and liberties. Not those that choose Clapper, Mueller, Alexander, and Brennan as their hero's and want to punish those that dare speak truth to power.

All the chicken littles stricken with info-fobia in here parroting and screaming all his many cloaks donned by the main stream corporate news media like ..TERRORIST ENABLER...NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT....PUTIN LOVER.....BAD BOYFRIEND.....whatever you think, you should give this video a listen to. And then go through the transcript here:
http://www.ted.com/talks/edward_snowden_here_s_how_we_take_back_the_internet/transcript

...and please quote anything that he says that you disagree with...I'd really like to know...

CA: Ed, some questions for you. You've been called many things in the last few months. You've been called a whistleblower, a traitor, a hero. What words would you describe yourself with?

1:08 ES: You know, everybody who is involved with this debate has been struggling over me and my personality and how to describe me. But when I think about it, this isn't the question that we should be struggling with. Who I am really doesn't matter at all. If I'm the worst person in the world, you can hate me and move on. What really matters here are the issues. What really matters here is the kind of government we want, the kind of Internet we want, the kind of relationship between people and societies. And that's what I'm hoping the debate will move towards, and we've seen that increasing over time. If I had to describe myself, I wouldn't use words like "hero." I wouldn't use "patriot," and I wouldn't use "traitor." I'd say I'm an American and I'm a citizen, just like everyone else.

One that stood out to me when I watched the video and one that you almost never hear. Anywhere.

But TPTB have always used diversionary tactics to keep their minions distracted and in-line with the official thought-stream.

That's why whenever you see ANY argument against Edward Snowden, it ends the minute the TRUTH is raised. They have no answer to the TRUTH. All they have is WELL, EVERYBODY'S DOING IT. YOU'D BETTER BELIEVE THEY'RE DOING IT!!! SO WE HAVE TO DO IT!!!

This is what we've devolved to. This is what constitutes leadership in the world. How did it get this way, you might wonder?

People are afraid. Have been for a while, but they're really afraid now. Most live in FEAR and they hope that by placating the GIANT MONSTER that it won't step on them like it does everyone else that disagrees with it.

Some are just willfully-ignorant. Like children afraid to open their eyes in the darkness.

America is the 900 pound bully of the world. We kill babies and children and their mothers indiscriminately -- and yet you'd almost never know it was happening at all. Thanks to Snowden and Chelsea Bradley now everyone knows what we do.

Many are incensed by these revelations because they'd been looking away and ignoring the carnage for so long and gotten away with it. But now they can't look away. It's too late for that.

- Now they have to choose sides. Truth or BS.

Where are the Usual Suspects on this thread? Its obviously because they are part of the group you describe:

Many are incensed by these revelations because they'd been looking away and ignoring the carnage for so long and gotten away with it. But now they can't look away. It's too late for that.

And they have sadly chosen BS over Truth out of some kind of misplaced cult of personality. Which is laughable, because while they decry those who can see the importance of what Snowden has done in raising the conversation as being hero/traitor worshipers, they then ignore their own blind hero worshiping. But deep down it must just be a fear of not being able to handle the truth, and so not wanting to hear it.

and a brilliant quote from George Orwell!

NSA said to infiltrate Chinese telecom's operations...

We see THIS piece by David Sanger and Nicole Perlroth form the NYTs that ran in my Sunday's Post Gazette paper today…

WASHINGTON - U.S. officials have long considered Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications giant, a security threat, blocking it from business deals in the United States for fear that the company would create "back doors" in its equipment that could allow the Chinese military or Beijing-backed hackers to steal corporate and government secrets.

But even as the United States made a public case about the dangers of buying from Huawei, classified documents show that the National Security Agency was creating its own back doors - directly into Huawei's networks.

More here: http://www.post-gazette.com/news/nation/2014/03/23/NSA-B-NSA-said-to-infiltrate-Chinese-telecom-s-operations/stories/201403230177

So… What double standard do we have now, in the name of national security?

20. What the USA should be doing
Sun Mar 23, 2014, 03:18 PM
Mar 2014

much the same as the non-proliferation treaty on nuclear arms, they should lead the charge, maybe a world conference, on ways to safeguard privacy for EVERYONE, and find ways to still be able to balance that with the ability to call for emergency taps on bonifide terrorist cell communications if need be. If they were restricted to actual terrorist activity, and not corporate espionage, to be freely shared with all countries, it would be a place to start.

But what I gather is that it is MOSTLY corporate espionage, probably a lot about finding dirt on politicians. And the USA doesn't want to give that up, even while calling on other countries to lay down their spying arms.

… and what I believe is hoped to be the next step by patriots like Snowden…

So, the American people must lead the charge to see those steps through… I'm sure there is a lot of fear of the consequence unless we do peacefully.

Can we do that? (rhetorical question)… We must do that or never survive this civil violation.
