I've known about it for a while, and it seems like a very strange arrangement for a secular state. (Or maybe Germany isn't officially secular.)

I should think the Vatican is an embarrassment for him. Sell every bit of it that isn't literally necessary for the Catholic church's function and buy food and other necessities for the poor!
ALL of the church hierarchy should get off their holy asses and go mingle with the poorest, filthiest disenfranchised they can find.
