The wikipedia article about the Crimean War is quite good, especially in contemporary context: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimean_War

Austerity almost never fixes anything. Russia has a strangle hold on the Ukraine via gas pipeline. If Putnam doesn't like the elected leader of Ukraine Russia can just up the gas prices and crush the Ukrainian economy. It has nothing to do with Yushchenko abilities as an economist.

Most rest of the info was good though.

...for a few people.

Sure, businesses would like lots of purchases. But the only way to deal with a depressed economy would be to tax the rich, who are hoarding their money, and move it into the hands of the middle and lower classes, because they’re in a situation where they’ll spend it as fast as they get it. That would solve the problem of demand, but only at the expense of the rich and corporations.

They’ve made a choice: They’d rather tough it out—stick it to the mass of people, even at the cost of losing customers—than be the one who gets hit with the tab for boosting the masses’ purchasing power. ~Richard Wolff
