The polar ice caps are melting, hurricanes and droughts ravish the planet, and the earth's population is threatened by catastrophic climate change. Millions of American jobs have been sent overseas and aren't coming back. Young African-American men make up the majority of America's prison population. Half of the American population are poor or near poor, living precariously on the brink, while the top one percent own as much as the bottom eighty. Government police-state spying on its citizens is pervasive. Consequently, as former President Jimmy Carter has said, "we have no functioning democracy."
Imagine: Living In a Socialist U.S.A., edited by Francis Goldin, Debby Smith, and Michael Steven Smith, is at once an indictment of American capitalism as the root cause of our spreading dystopia and a cri de coeur for what life could be like in the United States if we had economic as well as a real political democracy. This anthology features essays by revolutionary thinkers, activists, and artistsincluding Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore, civil rights activist Angela Davis, incarcerated journalist Mumia Abu Jamal, and economist Rick Wolff addressing various aspects of a new society and, crucially, how to get from where we are now to where we want to be, living in a society that is truly fair and just.

Noam Chomsky responds to a caller's request for his thoughts on socialism, during a 2003 interview, explaining the real meaning of socialism which has been used as a cover by non-socialists entities, and bastardized in our own country, the truth of which is truly at the heart of real "democracy" envisioned by the founding fathers.
Let me know how you feel about our direction as a democracy.

(16,104 posts)And socialism is democracy at its best.
And of course we have neither in the USA.
I recall Michael Moore documenting in one of his films how the corporate oligarchs greatest fear is if "the people" woke up and discovered the true power of voting, and we voted in our own self-interest.
How do we wake up?
mother earth
(6,002 posts)true democracy.
I think it is important for the attacks on "socialism" to end, and for it to be defined as it truly is, the opposite of fascism. The right distorts socialism as fascism and that disinformation blinds us from what we truly could achieve. What a grand game fascism and predatory capitalism has woven, an Orwellian adventure.
I like that,

(16,104 posts)points out in the video we have not seen socialism, but as you say the elites have convinced at least a generation that socialism is a failed concept. And a dirty word.
Seeking the truth is not a passive activity.

(5,610 posts)Sadly, we are far from a democracy.
Bernie Sanders knows what a real Democracy is: A Socialist Democracy.
