The US has one of the least useful social safety nets of any western country and many Americans resent having even that much.

Just listen to them. Judges aren't immune to propaganda.

So, what Taibbi says is true. But there is also an organized effort to disenfranchise the poor, the disabled, the elderly and others. This is being done in the interests of ever lower taxes on the "well off".
