" It's not my ideas, I borrowed them from great literature" (paraphrased)
The very same literature about the suffering/plight of men/women, which is now placed on the back burner. When the RW'ers started putting all of these "knowledge (my ass) tests" as the indicators of how intelligent/well taught the students are, they
(still are) leaving out the most important parts.
Can you think for yourself, have you read the classics, do you understand or are you capable of empathizing with the tragic circumstances these characters find themselves in? That is the measure of a real education.
I graduated college in the '80's, from a Liberal Arts University (that was affordable) with a degree in Literature, based on my 9th grade teachers influence on a young man who was headed in the wrong direction. Bless you Mrs. Marshall, I still remember the conversation, I was wearing a "grow your own tee-shirt"...
I chose an occupation in "the trades" but my liberal arts education shaped my life.
Today (I have a Son graduating H.S. this month) it is just "teaching to the tests." My H.S. teacher daughter agrees, it is not an education (unless you are wealthy and can send your child to a "real school", not a wannabe, for-profit charter "school&quot it is a rote memory exercise that instructs you to make all of the money you can at anyones expense.
It marginalizes those that do not embrace this instruction. IMO, that is a big reason we have these school shootings...
We must Unite (there are about 300 million of us) on our common ground. "They" exploit and encourage our differences for their benefit.
This can be done non-violently but soon. "It is hard to put the Jeanie back in the bottle."
